1: Who is “NativeBeatz”?
My real name is Bonga Nyembe born 11 May 1989 at Bara (Chris Hani) Hospital in Soweto. I grew up in Diepkloof and when I was two (2years), my parents moved to Naturena suburbs where my mother worked as a domestic worker and when I was four (4years), my parents moved again, this time to an informal settlement called "Joe Slovo Park" next to Eldorado Park, that is where I spent most of my life. I have three (3) sisters and a younger brother. I am the second last born of my sibilings and yeah, thats Bonga Nyembe aka "NativeBeatz".
2: Who or what got you into dj'ing and when?
The love of music and I should also give credit to my high school mates "Balebetse Setuke, Mbuyiseni Mbele, Jabulani Ngwenya and Vuyo Mjijwa. These are the guys that introduced me to the house music scene.
3: Are you part of any DJ crew or movement and what is it?
I am part of a crew called S.K. Label design. It consists of four (4) guys including myself. We deal with clothing and community based events and activities. Which we are still struggling getting off the ground because of financial reasons.
4: Why the name "NativeBeatz" and how/where did you get it from?
A friend of mine Thapelo use to call me "Beatz" and I was a huge fan of "HoodNative" (Still am). I guess I just took the two and combined them into one super cool name, however, I don't really remember how the name "NativeBeatz" came about.
5: What kind of house music do you play?
I play Deep Tech, soul and Tribal.
6: Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by DJ's who love and respect what they do, the likes of "Black Coffee" and "Jay-Tee" (Just to name a few). These guys keep me going and their work speaks for itself.
7: If you are not listening to house music. What other genre of music are listening too?
Uhm... If im listening to house, then I am listening to Hip-hop or RnB.
8: What do you think of the state of house music in South Africa and where do you see it in five years?
Firstly, I would like to give props to our local DJ's/producers "Bigups" to the guys. The state of house in SA is great, I mean we got international DJ's wanting to remix or sign our local talent, our house scene even made "Ralf Gum" to move to SA and if that's not good enough...then "Angaz' ke. Uhm..In five years where do I see SA house music? Yoh...I dont know because where it is now, its hard to tell but it is definitely going place you can't imagine.
9: In your own opinion. What is the most challenging thing about being a DJ:
People taking advantage of you because they know you now, you must do favors.
10: Which brand of CDJ's and sound system is your favourite?
CDJ's it has to be Pioneer 2000. Sound system...ey,, I don't know because there are a lot of good sound systems I played with, but for now, I will go with "JBL".
11: What is you thought on the matter that every third person you meet on the street is a dj and is this good for the dj scene or not?
Well, everyone has the right to do what they want, but my problem is some just don't understand the DJ industry. They just think of it as a money "Money maker" just to get a quick buck and that is not good for the dj scene because a lot of guys put in hard work.
12: Is software dj'ing a better choice than hardware dj'ing (vice versa) and why?
Well... It depends on what you like as a dj, like mina I prefer hardware but I don't have a problem with software dj'ing because I started out using it.
13: What is you favourite party scene and why?
The club scene is my favourite scene, it's more calm there and you get to play what you want, Manje ema bashini, its song request waya-waya. lol
14: Where would you like to see yourself in the future as a dj?
I would really like to represent SA in the "Miami Music Confrence"
